GEN 1 FEATURES & BENEFITS

High quality wheel end replacement parts for domestic and import applications.

Gen 1 wheel bearings can be found in driven front and rear wheels. They may also be in integral drum designs on the non-driven wheels of smaller cars. (Always refer to and follow vehicle and product specifications.)

Characteristics

Cartridge style wheel bearings
May either be a ball or tapered design
Are double row angular contact bearings
Most have a split inner ring
Presence of split inner ring indicates that when hand rotated, each half of the bearing has the ability to rotate independently of the other
Generally greased and sealed for life

installation tips

Certain Gen 1 wheel bearings may include a wheel speed sensor magnetic impulse ring
The impulse ring is built into the seal on one side of the bearing
Gen 1 wheel bearings with an impulse ring can only be installed in one direction
The encoder ring must be placed next to the wheel speed sensor in order for Anti-Lock Braking System, Traction Control System and Stability Control System to function

Flange includes threaded holes (also called studs) and spigot (also called a pilot) to center and mount the brake and wheel

Can be found in non-driven front or rear wheels
May also include an impulse wheel (also called a tone ring) as part of the Anti-Lock Braking System, Traction Control System and/or Stability Control System
Typically, the impulse wheel is located on the outer ring

Characteristics

Can either be a tapered or ball design
Consist of a double row bearing design that incorporates a flange for wheel and brake rotor attachment and a second flange for fixing the unit to the suspension
Outer ring flange is bolted to the suspension
The rotating inner ring, with its tough flange, spigot (also called, pilot) and threaded holes (also called, studs), is designed for mounting of the brake and wheel
Greased and sealed
Used for both driven and non-driven wheel applications

installation tips

For driven wheel applications, torque is transmitted to the inner ring via a spline, which is included
Some Gen 3 hub wheel bearings may also include a wheel speed sensor as part of the Anti-Lock Braking System, Traction Control System, and/or Stability Control System
The sensor can be located between the bearing row on the outboard or inboard flange
Some sensors are serviceable with a replacement sensor cord
Some are permanently sealed and are non-serviceable
